New submission from Jen
Waiting to cross the awful junction on Mile End Road this morning, a youngish man with a red and white striped shirt, about 5’5″, stood really close to me, then said something to me that I didn’t catch. I crossed the road and when I had to wait on the island for the next lights to change, he was right by my side again, said something again, and then proceeded to follow me closely down the road. I picked up my pace and was soon at my office, but am still mad at myself for not confronting him.

Hilarious – I thought you said previously that you didn’t censor posts, Hollaback? I noted this guy’s ethnicity as part of the story – as you would the rest of his details like any description you’d give to the police – and it’s been deleted again!
Hi Jen,
As is stated above the submission box, Hollaback has a policy about not replacing sexism with racism – in terms of our posts we feel that any reference to race in the context of describing at attacker can often create assumptions and play into the hands of damaging stereotypes of ‘predatory’ men somehow having a certain ethnic background. Depending on the nature of the posts, sometimes we will remove a reference, as all posters are made aware that this is not something we want to publish. HollabackLDN does not in any way see itself as a parallel or equivalent to reporting to the police, we encourage anyone who does want to report an incident to do so, if it is right for them.
To make this clearer, we will consider amending our posting guidelines to clearly explain that any racial reference will result in the post not being published at all.
Many thanks,
HollabackLDN
Ah, so any mention of race = racism. Thanks for clearing that up.
Not at all, as there are some posts which do mention race, however it always needs to be relevant to the story. We recieve several hundred submissions and this general ‘if in doubt’ policy allows us to not have to worry that any racial slurs will slip through the net – we have to adhere to this policy as per the mandatory Global Hollaback guidelines, which we’ve added to our site under ‘Share your story’. Please check it out. Thanks
