”Neither was the attention wanted nor was it warranted.”

New submission from Lily

I was so shocked that this happened today, I just had to share it.

I was driving home (yes, driving in my car, my own car, my space, my private space on the road) and I was minding my own business when I rounded a corner on a tight country lane to be faced by a van. It was a delivery van, for a furniture company, handily for me, well sigh-written front, back and sides.

The weather has been nice so I was driving home with my windows open. I had my music on but not too loud. I squeezed my large car over to the left so both me and the van had space to pass each other, and then I heard a wolf whistle from the van.

The man in the drivers seat of the van also had his window open and could clearly see down into my car as we passed. Thankfully I wasn’t wearing a skirt but I was wearing a tight t-shirt which was made even tighter by the seat belt crossing my chest.

Neither was the attention wanted nor was it warranted. Thankfully I had the sense of mind to take note of the sign-writing. I didn’t catch the number plate of the van, but I know who owns it now, and I have a fair recollection of the person driving it. He wasn’t a young man, but perhaps somebody I would peg as early 50′s, spectacles and a white shirt.

I shall tomorrow be calling the furniture company and speaking to somebody about my complaint. If they decide not to take the matter seriously, I will report it to the police. If a member of the public was subjected to that by one of my employees (I’m a human resources manager) then at the very least a disciplinary investigation would be conducted.

I was soooooo annoyed by the disrespectful behaviour of this van driver that I am determined to raise awareness about this kind of harassment.

Well done HollabackLDN; I’m glad you were here when I needed you.

I've got your back!

    Hi Lily,

Thanks for your post and your kind words. It’s support like yours that helps us to keep going! It’s of particular interest to hear from a human resources manager who says this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated at your company.

Just wondering if you heard anything back from the furniture company?
